Scripture

When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there…
Luke 23:33a

Bucket of Nails

Grab a nail from the basket. Hold on to it as you think about the pain Jesus went through for you.

Reflections

Huge, sharp spikes are hammered through Jesus’ writes and feet—he almost loses consciousness with each swing of the hammer. Now he is raised up and the cross drops with a thud into a hold in the ground. Jesus’ weight hands on those spikes, and to breathe he has to pull himself up on the nails. A sponge with vinegar is stuck in his mouth, and soldiers below him gamble for his clothes, even as the blood, breath, and life drain from his body.

Prayer

O Jesus, dear Jesus, though you never sinned, you hang there on the cross. I should be there, not you. You hang there in my place. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

(Reflection and Prayer taken from Soul Shaper by Tony Jones)
