Reading Lord of the Rings again

I decided to dive back into the world of middle-earth. it's great to be surrounded by elves and dwarves and hobbits, those things we only find in our imagination.

a couple quotes i liked:

"Always after a defeat and a respite, the Shadow takes another shape and grows again."
Gandalf

"Don't adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story."
Bilbo

I have hope for you yet, Josh, lol. I myself finally purchased the green, leather and hardbound version of The Hobbit. Will go nicely with my growing collection. Make sure to read The Silmarillion too when you finish LOTR.

are you freakin' kidding me?! 'the silmarillion' is for die-hard middle-earth lovers only! i tried reading a couple pages and was bored out of my mind! no offense, i like 'the hobbit' and 'the lord of the rings,' but 'the silmarillion' reads more like a history book.

Kipper...As I've read LOTR, I've seen a lot of hints about the Silmarillion and have wondered about it. But then I've got friends like Dave who think it's a waste of time.

But I figure if I could get into the index in the back (appendixes?) I could probably get into the Silmarillion.

You'll always just be a wanna-be Tolkien fan, Josh, until you dare to read the history behind his stories. Tolkien created the stories of The Silmarillion as a historical backdrop to the saga of The Hobbit and LOTR. The beauty of the whole comes from reading the whole, not by settling for it in part. It would be like saying you married your wife for her looks. Personally, I'd rather not be around when she hears that. ;-)

No. I wouldn't want to be around when she hears that either. Thank God it's not true.

So, you may have twisted my arm...i was actually able to pay attention to the council of elrond this time around. the last two times I read it I kinda/really skimmed it, trying to pick up details, but this time, I've dived in and have loved it.
